WAGGGS OLAVE AWARD 2021-2023

‘SUSTAINABILITY – A FUTURE FOR ALL OF US’

“Happiness comes not from what we have but from what we give and what we share.”

Lady Olave Baden Powell, World Chief Guide

The Olave Award honours the memory of the World Chief Guide, Lady Olave Baden-Powell, and keeps alive her belief in the spirit of service. It is awarded by WAGGGS at every World Conference to Girl Guide and Girl Scout groups that have created positive change in their communities, with a different theme chosen for each triennium.

The Olave Award provides an opportunity to highlight outstanding projects happen in local communities around the globe and for Member Organisations to inspire and be inspired by each other’s’ stories.

HAVE YOU BEEN WORKING ON PROJECT(S) WITH THE THEME OF ‘SUSTAINABILITY’?

SUSTAINABITILY NOT ONLY REFERS TO ISSUES RELATED TO THE ENVIRONMENT BUT REFERS TO ANYTHING THAT CAN BE SUSTAINED AND CONTRIBUTE TO MAKING A POSITIVE CHANGE TO OUR WORLD.

THE SCALE OF THE PROJECT(S) DOES NOT MATTER, AS LONG AS IT’S RELATED TO SUSTAINABITLITY

IF SO, CONSIDER NOMINATING YOUR PROJECT FOR AN OLAVE AWARD 🏅

THE OLAVE AWARD

WHAT IS OUR THEME FOR THE OLAVE AWARD 2021-2023?

For the Olave Award in 2021 - 2023, we want to focus on the theme of ‘sustainability’.

We are at the junction of paving the future for our members. This theme goes hand in hand with WAGGGS’ initiatives that focus on the sustainability of our membership and leadership through Compass 2032 and Motion 32. If we look further, the United Nations also continue to encourage countries to put effort into ensuring the sustainability of the planet through their Sustainable Development Goals.

So how will winning Olave Award projects make a difference? This will happen by:

OR

  • Ensuring the sustainability of our Movement by facilitating and promoting young women’s involvement in governance as a result of the agreements made through our work on ‘Motion 32' from the 2017 World Conference, for example providing meaningful opportunities for girls and young women to be involved in decisionmaking processes

OR

  • Putting efforts towards activities and plans that relate to achieving the commitments we have made as a Movement in making Girl Guide and Girl Scout experiences more inclusive and accessible for all girls and young women including breaking down barriers that stop girls from different backgrounds or with different needs taking part fully in Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting activities.

WHO CAN BE NOMINATED FOR THE OLAVE AWARD?

The Olave Award is open to all Girl Guide and Girl Scout groups/units/troops who have planned and carried out  a project based on the theme of sustainability. Projects that have taken place, or are due to take place, from September 2021 to July 2023 can be nominated.

Each Member Organisation can select up to three groups to submit as nominees for the award and all nominated projects must have a supporting statement and the endorsement of their Member Organisation before being submitted.

HOW ARE PROJECTS EVALUATED?

Group projects can be of any length, of any size, and focus on any community group. They will be evaluated according to seven criteria:

  • Relevance: Did the project match the theme of the award this year?
  • Creativity: Did the group find new and creative ways to work towards sustainability?
  • Effectiveness: How far did the project meet or exceed its objectives?
  • Inclusive: How inclusive is this project towards its stakeholders and how many people / target groups did the project reach?
  • Impact: How much has this project positively impacted its target groups?
  • Sustainability: Has the project created lasting and effective change? Will it have lasting impact, or grow over time?
  • Group engagement: How much involvement did the girls and young women in the group have in d in planning, running and evaluating the project?

A panel of judges representing all five regions of WAGGGS will adjudicate.

WHEN WILL THE WINNER(S) BE ANNOUNCED?

The winner(s) will be announced during the 38th WAGGGS World Conference, taking place in person in Cyprus in July 2023. The Member Organisation representatives attending the World Conference will receive the award on behalf of the winning projects team. This will include a certificate for the winning troop/patrol/unit and a badge for all members of the winning troop/patrol/unit that took part in the project.
