Middle and Older Years (9+ years)

Outcomes:

  • Understand what equality means and explore how inequality presents itself in the world

15 minutes

Preparation

  • Barrier Cards

What you need to Collect

  • The top 5 barriers that the group select
  • Some words and phrases or pictures that explain why they chose these barriers – thinking on an individual, community and global level

What Happens

  1. Now that you have imagined an equal world where all girls can thrive, take time to reflect on whether that is a reality in the world today. Around the world, inequality does exist, and many people are treated unfairly. For this activity, you will be exploring the barriers that stop girls from thriving and feeling their best.
  2. Reflect on an equal (better) world. What is preventing us from living in a world like that?
  3. Look at the Barrier Cards together, making sure everyone understands what each one means. Is there anything missing that was mentioned during the previous question? If so, add these in.
  4. Using the Barrier Cards, work together as a group to rank them from the most to least significant barriers.
  5. Once they have been ranked, get them to explain their reasoning. Why did you put them in this order?
  6. Now select 5 barriers that were ranked the most significant. Get into 5 groups and assign each group a different barrier. Their task is to note down how this barrier affects girls on an individual level, community level and global level.
  7. Come back together and get the groups to share different levels of impact for each barrier.

Create a brave space together to explore and facilitate this discussion in more detail. If they feel comfortable, encourage participants to share examples of when they have seen or experienced these barriers in their life.

If there is another barrier (not noted), please add this and create your own barrier card.
