Young Women's Stories

Catherine Harris • 11 Marzo 2026

Here you can read about individuals who have been impacted by the WAGGGS Giving Day, since its inception in 2021. Starting with Lydia, Hannah and Abigail. You can use the sidebar to navigate through other stories.

Lydia Wilson, Ghana

One challenge I encountered during my WAGGGS journey was when I became an Advocacy Champion where advocacy work is effectively engaging and persuading policymakers to prioritise and enact changes that benefit girls and young women, especially when competing interests and political agendas are involved. However, I overcame this by building strong, evidence-based cases that clearly demonstrate the benefits of proposed changes. Such as our #SheSurfsFreedom survey report to back my case.

Hannah Brisbane, UK

My time as a Global Advocacy Champion taught me better facilitation skills to be able to deliver sessions to different girls/young women on what "policy" is, why it's important to the lives of women and girls, why girls and women should use their voice to influence it and how they can do this

Abigail Christmas, Dominica

In 2022, I became a WAGGGS Global Advocacy Champion and got to attend the 67th Commissions on Status of Women at the United Nations in March 2023 to continue advocating for a safer world for girls and women. Guiding has opened a world of possibilities for me and has helped me maximise my potential to become a changemaker. It has also allowed me to help other girls and young women realize that their dreams can come become a reality and they can help change the world too!
