The STEM Changemakers Programme at the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts is a flagship initiative designed to address the persistent underrepresentation of girls and young women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). In a world increasingly shaped by STEM—from healthcare and climate action to communication and policy—girls continue to face systemic barriers that limit their participation.
These include lack of access to resources, low confidence, limited role models, and deeply rooted gender stereotypes. As a result, not only are girls held back from developing critical life skills such as problem-solving and critical thinking, but society also misses out on their perspectives in addressing some of the world’s most pressing challenges.
STEM Changemakers portfolio lead by its current projects, STEM Changemakers, Girls for Green Energy and STEM Discovery Day, responds to this need by equipping girls aged 10–18 with the skills, confidence and opportunities to actively engage with STEM in their everyday lives. As a badge programme grounded in the Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting (GG/GS) method, it emphasises non-formal, experiential learning—focusing not only on technical knowledge but also on transferable skills such as creativity, teamwork, adaptability and leadership. Through this approach, girls are supported to see themselves as capable contributors and leaders in STEM spaces.
The programme is currently being delivered across multiple Member Organisations, including Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore, Nepal, Hong Kong and Sri Lanka, through global programmes and outreach across the Movement. It is also supported by the five World Centres of WAGGGS, located across the Asia Pacific, Western Hemisphere, Europe and Africa regions, helping extend its reach to girls around the world. The programme is built on a strong foundation of capacity strengthening for leaders and organisations, ensuring sustainable and high-quality delivery.
As part of the broader STEM Changemakers portfolio, the programme fosters global collaboration through shared platforms, resources and role models across the Movement. The programme’s aim is to build a generation of confident, skilled young women who can shape their own futures and contribute meaningfully to a more equitable and innovative world.

STEM Changemakers
The STEM Changemakers Activity Pack is an engaging journey designed to spark curiosity, build confidence, and empower girls with real-world STEM skills. Through hands-on activities, teamwork, and problem-solving, participants explore real-life challenges and develop creativity, critical thinking, and leadership. Structured across progressive levels, the pack supports girls to understand STEM concepts, apply them through practical tasks, and innovate solutions linked to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The programme creates a space and capacity for girls to grow as thinkers, leaders, and changemakers using STEM skills!
Girls for Green Energy
Girls for Green Energy is an initiative by WAGGGS and Siemens Energy using Minecraft Education’s Planet Rescuers to teach renewable energy and environmental sustainability through gamified challenges, supported by offline activities that reinforce learning and real-world application.
