Global Safeguarding Specialist: Volunteer Opportunity  

Be part of a dedicated team of safeguarding specialists working to strengthen safe spaces across the Girl Guide and Girl Scout Movement.    This team forms part of the wider Growing and Learning (GAL) pool of consultants and sits within the Learning and Leadership Development Team at WAGGGs.

As part of a global network of skilled volunteers, you’ll use your expertise to support Member Organisations on their safeguarding journey. This role not only lets you work alongside like-minded professionals but also allows you to engage in diverse learning experiences, help shape global best practices, and ultimately support Member Organisations to develop meaningful, impactful safeguarding policies. Role Title: Global Safeguarding Specialist (Volunteer) 

Time Commitment: All volunteers are expected to deliver at least one capacity building project per year and attend quarterly team meetings. The time allocation for each project will vary but is likely to be a minimum of 12 hours over a four-month period.  

Role Overview 

This role is for volunteers with specialist knowledge and skills in safeguarding, child protection or other relevant fields. You will collaborate with regional teams to deliver tailored guidance and training; review and enhance safeguarding policies; and support the learning and implementation of best practices in safeguarding as a foundation for quality Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting.  

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Capacity Building: Provide tailored support to MOs in developing safeguarding policies and practices relevant to the MO’s needs and context and aligned with global standards.  

  • Training and Workshops: Facilitate engaging, safeguarding workshops or activities using non-formal education methods to ensure practical understanding and application. 

  • Resource Development and Review: Review, update, and adapt safeguarding resources and tools to meet diverse needs across regions. 

  • Policy Feedback: Offer comprehensive feedback on draft safeguarding policies, supporting MOs in creating effective and relevant protection frameworks. 

  • Strategic Contribution: Engage with WAGGGS' global safeguarding work, contributing insights, sharing best practices, and helping improve global standards across the GGGS Movement 

Requirements  

Experience: Strong understanding and experience in safeguarding, child protection or other related field in either a work or voluntary setting. For example, you may have...     

  • Considerable experience designing or delivering training on child safe spaces, protection, gender  or other similar topics 

  • Supported the development of policy or frameworks which reduce risks of harm   

  • Been responsible for managing safety and welfare concerns in a designated lead, focal point of other child/ youth safety role in your MO or other youth focused organisation  

  • Good knowledge of the key principles and best practice for keeping children and young people safe (safeguarding standards)  

  • Created safe and brave spaces which support physical and emotional safety and foster a ‘speak up’ culture of trust, respect and inclusion. 

 

Skills: Ability to communicate complex safeguarding concepts effectively, facilitate engaging training sessions, and provide clear, constructive feedback on policies. 

Commitment to WAGGGS' Values: Strong dedication to creating safe spaces for girls and young women, aligned with WAGGGS’ mission and always abiding by our code of conduct and organisational policies.  

Language Proficiency: Fluency in English is preferred but not essential, with additional languages (French, Spanish, or Arabic) highly desirable. 

Experience of capacity building, project management or work in a global cross-cultural setting is valuable but not essential.

They should respect diverse perspectives, work effectively in varied contexts, and approach safeguarding with an open mind and a ‘worldly mindset.’
