ACTIVITY SEVEN: WHAT COULD WE DO?

What does WAGGGS want to know?

What role girls think Girl Guides/Girl Scouts could have in supporting our own girls to reach their potential in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), and the impact we could make in our community/world?

What  to do

As a whole group (or small groups if you have a very large number of girls, with a leader supporting each group and recording their discussion) ask girls to:

  1. Think about their own experience as Girl Guides/Girl Scouts. What do you already do that can help develop Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) interests and skills? Do you enjoy these activities? What activities or opportunities would they like to keep doing? What new activities could you try out? You could help facilitate this by discussing some of the careers they liked the idea of and how to help them learn/experience more, from trips to mentoring to in-meeting activities.
  2. Think about their community/country - would they like to help break down the barriers to girls and women's involvement in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)? What do they think Girl Guides/Girl Scouts could do to make a difference to raise awareness or ask decision makers for change?

Please record girls' key ideas as they discuss.

Online option:

Either of the following methods:

  1. Discussions in break-out room or plenary, depending on group size, using the questions listed in "What to do" above.
  2. Use applications like Google SheetGoogle Document or other online collaborative applications. Remember to share the editable link with the participants.
    • Pre-type the questions listed in "What to do" above in the document/sheet and ask participants to type their response to each question under/next to the question.
  3. Use applications like Kahoot, Slido, AhaSlidesMentimeter or other interactive online engagement applications. Use one slide for one of each of the following questions:
    • Open ended question: What do you already do in Girl Guides/Girl Scouts that can help develop Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) interests and skills?
    • Poll (Yes/No option or a scale): Do you enjoy these activities
    • Open ended question (optional): Why do you enjoy these activities?
    • Open ended question: What activities or opportunities would you like to keep doing?
    • Open-ended question: What new activities would you like to try out?
    • Poll (Yes/No option): Think about their community/country - would they like to help break down the barriers to girls and women's involvement in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)?
    • Open-ended questions: What do they think Girl Guides/Girl Scouts could do to make a difference to raise awareness or ask decision makers for change?

RECORDING THE RESPONSES:

Use a table like the format below to record the responses from the group.
