The GEF Small Grants Programme in Malawi offers grants to local non-profit organisations for community-based projects addressing environmental challenges and promoting social inclusion.

The Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme (GEF SGP) in Malawi, implemented by UNDP, is currently in its Eighth Operational Phase (OP8) and focuses on supporting community-based initiatives that address pressing environmental challenges while enhancing local livelihoods and promoting social inclusion.

This call for proposals specifically targets projects in the districts of Mzimba, Rumphi, and Nkhata Bay, with an additional strategic initiative for sustainable urban solutions open to organisations in Blantyre, Zomba, Lilongwe, and Mzuzu. The programme encourages innovative approaches that integrate capacity development, project sustainability, replication, and upscaling, as well as mainstreaming environment, climate change, social inclusion, and gender equality.

Grants ranging from US$5,000 to US$75,000 are available for selected projects, which may run for up to 24 months.

Eligible applicants must be local non-profit, community-based, or civil society organisations registered in Malawi, with at least three years of relevant experience and a proven track record of working with communities on environmental, agricultural, or livelihoods-related activities. Strong community involvement and alignment with the programme’s thematic priorities are essential for consideration.

Project proposals must address one or more of the following areas: capacity development, innovation, project sustainability, potential for replication or upscaling, and mainstreaming of environment and climate change. Social inclusion, gender equality, and equity considerations are highly desirable and will be factored into the review process.
