Donor: Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme (GEF SGP)
Location: Zimbabwe
Beneficiaries: Organisations
Project focus areas: Biodiversity, climate change and land degradation
Funding amount: USD 75,000
Project duration: Two years
Deadline of application: 22 June 2026
The Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme (GEF SGP) is inviting applications for Low Value Grants to support community-led initiatives focused on environmental conservation and sustainable development in Zimbabwe.
The call covers thematic areas including biodiversity conservation, climate change mitigation, and land degradation management. Under biodiversity, projects may focus on conserving threatened ecosystems and species, sustainable agriculture and forestry management, eco-tourism, wetland protection, invasive species control, climate-smart agroecology, sustainable forest management, and value addition for agro-biodiversity products.
Under climate change, the programme supports renewable energy solutions, low-carbon technologies, energy-efficient systems, fuel-saving stoves, sustainable transport, tree planting, and awareness initiatives linked to environmental and socio-economic benefits. Under land degradation, projects may include restoration of degraded land, sustainable land management practices, climate-smart agriculture, water harvesting, terracing, conservation farming, livestock production, agroecology, organic farming, seed banks, and livelihood diversification initiatives.
Implemented by the United Nations Development Programme on behalf of the GEF Partnership, the programme supports innovative and impactful community-based actions addressing environmental threats such as biodiversity loss, climate change, land degradation, international waters, and chemicals and waste management. The initiative places strong emphasis on social inclusion by supporting women, youth, Indigenous Peoples, persons with disabilities, and rural communities.
Applicants are encouraged to select one major thematic area, although projects may incorporate activities from more than one theme. The programme requires proposals to demonstrate innovation, sustainability, measurable impact, and community participation. Awareness-raising activities alone will not be sufficient unless combined with practical interventions that create tangible environmental and livelihood benefits.
Eligible applicants include national non-governmental organizations, community-based organizations, Indigenous Peoples organizations, non-governmental academic institutions, women and youth groups, and rural communities. Private sector entities, individuals, and government institutions are not eligible for funding. Registered organizations must provide proof of registration and governance documents, while unregistered community-based organizations may still apply under specific conditions, including establishing a dedicated project bank account.
The maximum grant amount available under this call is USD 75,000, and projects should be implemented within a period of two years. Applicants are also required to submit detailed budgets using the prescribed GEF SGP budget template and provide supporting documentation such as CVs of key personnel, board member information, meeting minutes, support letters, and evidence of community consultations.
