Peer Leaders Powering Girls for Green Energy!
When Girl Guides Singapore introduced Minecraft Education: Planet Rescuers as part of the Girls for Green Energy pilot, many adult leaders quickly realised they were out of their depth—feeling dizzy, disoriented, and unsure how to guide others in the unfamiliar game world. The challenge was real enough that some even hesitated to join the project.
To keep the programme moving, the team turned to the girls for support. Initially, it was a simple idea—ask those more comfortable with the game to help others. But this practical solution opened the door to something more meaningful.
In collaboration with the WAGGGS Meaningful Youth Participation (MYP) team both leaders and girls were equipped with tailored handbooks and support. They introduced the peer leadership concept and provided the tools to help girls and adults work together in a safe and brave space.
With this support, Girl Guides Singapore quickly embraced the approach—and peer leaders began playing an active role in school sessions — explaining gameplay, guiding their peers, and creating a fun and collaborative learning environment. Along the way, they also grew as leaders—practicing communication, problem-solving, and confidence.
“I feel proud and happy to have been given the opportunity to help and support my peers. Seeing them enjoy themselves while playing the game brought me a lot of joy.”
What started as a challenge became one of the programme’s greatest strengths—and a powerful example of the WAGGGS REAL experience: Relevant, Exciting, Accessible, and Learner-Led, powered by girls, for girls.
