Global Safeguarding Specialist

Global Safeguarding Specialist

Josephine Oates
Josephine Oates WAGGGS Staff

Be part of a dedicated team of safeguarding specialists working to strengthen safe spaces for girls and young women in diverse Member Organisations around the world!

As part of WAGGGSs vision and strategy to create more safe spaces where girls feel brave WAGGGS has developed a package of workshops and activities to support Member Organisations to strengthen their safeguarding policy and practice.

Context

Safe spaces are an essential foundation for quality girl guiding and scouting and are enabled by strong safeguarding and child protection policies and practices. In 2022 the Girl Experience team piloted a safeguarding capacity-building project designed for Member Oganisations to:

  • Clarify a clear vision and scope for safeguarding in Member Organisations

  • Identify steps to develop or strengthen safeguarding policy and/or practice

Using a non-formal education approach the workshops use the course of a river to map the journey of safeguarding and consider key elements and issues to address in their safeguarding policy and practice. We use scenarios to think through real-world challenges; explore how to talk about safeguarding, define key terms and definitions; and consider how to make safeguarding ‘REAL’ so that it is relevant, engaging, accessible, and led by the Member Organisations needs and risks.

The Role – Specialist Support

The Girl Experience team is recruiting a team of voluntary safeguarding specialists to deliver this project and provide bespoke capacity-building support to Member Organisations who wish to strengthen their safeguarding policy and practice.  Key activities include:

  • Work in a small team to deliver remote capacity-building support

  • Facilitate a series of safeguarding workshops using non-formal education approaches

  • Review, update and adapt resources and tools as necessary

  • Provide additional follow-up support and guidance
